Resident Evil 4 VR made its October 21, 2021 launch date, arriving exclusively on Meta's (then Facebook's) Oculus Quest 2 headset as promised.
What it actually is
Built by third-party studio Armature in partnership with Capcom, Resident Evil 4 VR isn't a remake of the story, it keeps the original 2005 game's narrative and world design intact, but rebuilds it from a first-person perspective with full VR motion controls: aiming, reloading, and knife fights all happen with your hands instead of a controller stick and button. It's worth not confusing it with the separate Resident Evil 4 remake that Capcom released for consoles and PC in 2023, that's a different game entirely, though it later got its own free VR add-on (more on that below).
How it was received
The reception was strong. Resident Evil 4 VR holds an aggregate score of 86 on OpenCritic, rated "Mighty" and recommended by 96% of critics, and it won Best VR/AR Game at The Game Awards 2021, going on to also win VR Game of the Year at the 2022 SXSW Gaming Awards. Reviewers praised how naturally the game's tense, resource-management horror translated into VR, though some noted the port is missing extra modes from the original release, like Separate Ways and The Mercenaries.
Where it stands now
Resident Evil 4 VR has remained a Meta Quest exclusive, there's still no PC VR (SteamVR) or PlayStation VR release of this particular game. That's a common point of confusion, because Capcom did separately add a free VR Mode to its 2023 Resident Evil 4 remake for PSVR2, launched in December 2023, a different product built for a different game, playable on PS5 rather than Quest.
