Who we are

This site is published by The Djeuce, an independent publication based in Harare, Zimbabwe. Our website address is https://thedjeuce.co.zw/. Questions about this policy can be sent to info@thedjeuce.co.zw.

What we collect

You can read The Djeuce without creating an account, and we don't ask you for personal details to view any page. The data we do handle falls into three groups.

  • Usage data collected automatically by the analytics and advertising services described below: pages visited, approximate location (country or city), device and browser type, referring site, and the time spent on a page.
  • Your email address, only if you choose to subscribe to our newsletter.
  • Anything you send us by email, such as a story tip, a correction, or an event flyer. We keep these only for as long as we need them to deal with your message.

Cookies

Cookies are small text files that a website stores on your device. We use them, and the third-party services below set them, to measure how the site is used and to serve and measure advertising. You can delete or block cookies in your browser settings. Blocking them will not stop the site working, though some embedded media and the newsletter form may not load.

Advertising

We use Google AdSense to show advertising on this site. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user's prior visits to this website or other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.

You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. You can also opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalised advertising at www.aboutads.info. Google's own policy on how it uses data from sites that use its services is at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

Where ads are shown through Google's network, other ad networks and vendors certified by Google may also serve ads and set cookies. Google publishes the list of these vendors at support.google.com/admanager/answer/9012903, with links to their privacy policies and opt-out options where available.

If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you will be asked for consent before personalised ads are shown, and you can change your choice at any time.

Analytics

Google Analytics 4 helps us understand which stories people read and where readers come from. It uses cookies and collects usage data as described above. Google's privacy policy is at policies.google.com/privacy, and you can stop Google Analytics collecting data with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

Metricool provides a second, lighter page-view counter that we use alongside our social media reporting. Its privacy policy is at metricool.com/privacy.

Newsletter

If you subscribe to our newsletter, your email address is stored with Sender, the service we use to send it. We use it only to send you The Djeuce's emails, and we never sell or rent it. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and you can also ask us to remove you by emailing info@thedjeuce.co.zw. Sender's privacy policy is at sender.net/privacy-policy.

Embedded content

Some pages embed video or audio from other services, such as YouTube and Spotify for Creators (formerly Anchor), where our podcast is hosted. Embedded content behaves as if you had visited that service directly: it may set its own cookies, collect usage data and track your interaction with the embed. Those services' own privacy policies apply.

Hosting and images

The site is hosted on Vercel, and images are served from Cloudflare Pages. Both may keep standard server logs, including IP addresses, for security and performance, under their own privacy policies. We also load fonts from Google Fonts, which records the request to deliver the font file.

Who we share data with

We don't sell your data. Usage data is processed by the services named above so they can provide analytics and advertising to us. We share what you email us with nobody, unless you ask us to, or the law requires it.

Your choices and rights

  • Block or delete cookies in your browser.
  • Opt out of personalised advertising through Google Ads Settings or aboutads.info, linked above.
  • Unsubscribe from the newsletter from any email, or by writing to us.
  • Ask us what data we hold about you, or ask us to delete it, by emailing info@thedjeuce.co.zw.

Depending on where you live, data protection law may give you further rights, including under Zimbabwe's Cyber and Data Protection Act and, for readers in Europe, the GDPR. We will honour any request we are able to, wherever you are.

Children

The Djeuce is written for a general audience and we don't knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you think a child has sent us personal data, email us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

When we change how the site handles data, we'll update this page and the date at the top. Significant changes will also be noted in the newsletter.
