History has always described Hitler as the worst human being to have ever walked the face of the earth however there is a man who committed way greater atrocities than him, I'm talking of King Leopold the second.

Hitler killed about 6 million Jews during his reign of terror whereas Leopold killed an estimated 15 million of African women, men, and children

Hitler ruled Germany with an iron fist from 1933 to 1945 his reign of terror lasted 12 years whereas Leopold invaded the Congo in 1885 till 1908 Leopold plundered the Congo for 23 years.

Now you must be thinking surely the world must've been outraged as Leopold was having his way with the Congo sadly the rest of the world was in on it in fact

In 1884 Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, and Portugal with the support of America convened at what is now known as the Berlin conference, European countries sat down and cut up the continent into small pieces that they could exploit for personal gain. The conference was organized by the first chancellor of Germany Otto von Bismarck.

It's only after Leopold had made his billions that the international community voiced their concerns about his heavy-handed approach to his dealings in the Congo even though he let it go his system of oppression remained.

Before colonization, the Congo was a peaceful rich colorful place. The people were warm and welcoming colonizers saw this accepting quality as a weakness and sought to exploit it

Leopold along with his cronies pillaged the Congo and turned it into a multi-billion dollar corporation that was fuelled by slave labour which worked towards set targets of production for ivory, rubber, and gold.

Failure to reach set targets would result in extreme punishment like lashings, cutting off limbs, beheadings, mutilations prior to Leopold's arrival such levels of violence were foreign to the Congo years later remanence of his abuse and trauma still remains to this day.

Today Belgium boasts of grand architectural feats and infrastructure funded by the congo while the youth have protested against statues of Leopold strewn across Belgium one cannot ignore his bloody legacy and the impact it continuously has in that part of the continent in fact Belgium was infamous for its human zoos that paraded black people like animals and also pillaged rare artwork and artifacts from the Congo.
