So the rumors are true. Netflix has confirmed that they are going to be offering games to its subscribers. To many, this might not seem like a natural progression but looking at the industry, Apple, Google, and Amazon on top of offering Netflix on their video streaming platforms, all offer gaming. So it was only a matter of time before Netflix went into this direction.
It looks like they are taking it very slow and want to learn how valuable gaming is to its subscribers. Netflix plans to offer mobile gaming first with the possibility of offering more games for consoles and PCs. There are definitely a lot of possibilities with the gaming industry still growing and climbing towards $200 Billion worldwide.
Netflix has already been experimenting with interactive content so they probably see this in the same "genre". They have already hired Mike Verdu, a former Electronic Arts executive. He is going to be heading Netflix's gaming division as president of game development.
In terms of titles, Netflix will eventually make games from their original franchises which will allow fans of Netflix movies and TV shows to play as their favorite characters. They will also make Original Titles that might then spin off into movies or TV Shows.
Netflix has maintained that they won't charge any extra fees to their subscribers, the games will come as part of a Netflix subscription. This is a move that is confusing to some however, If this move is successful in the coming years it might force platforms like Apple Arcade to be bundled with the AppleTV+ service instead of being a standalone service, but all this still remains to be seen.
